How can I detect fake credit alerts?

I hear the Yahoo boys use it to scam people. How do I be smart and not fall victim?

From what I read before, you can detect it by checking if the credited alert as increased the balance you had in your account before the alert. Or better still you quickly check your account balance for confirmation.
